This weeks 'Epicure' was a 'Green Issue'. I read it over a chai (fair trade)..
There are some great articles on the benefits of
organically grown food over conventional food,
as I read I remembered
something else:
A few months ago I saw a report on
Superphosphate
on the7:30 report .. look at it here
Any one who knows a farmer has probably heard of the use of Superphosphate on crops as a fertilizer.
In Australia we import the Phosphate we use.
In Australia we act against International Law by importing phosphate from Western Sahara.
Rich in resources, including phosphate, Western Sahara has been occupied by Morocco for 33 years, its people live in exile.
Tonight at a talk organized by the Australian Western Sahara Association I learnt that Western Sahara is Africa's East Timor.
The main speaker was Jose Ramos-Horta, President of Timor Leste.
A panel,
Kamal Fadel Western Sahara Representative to Australia & Ambassador to East Timor,
Janelle Saffin, Federal Member for Page,
and chaired by Lyn Allison, President of the Australia Western Sahara Association
spoke of Western Sahara's plight prior to Jose Ramos-Hortas arrival.
They were interrupted by a group of angry and very vocal Moroccans.
Each speaker continued on.
Each speaker explained that there was room for questions and answers
at the end of the discussion.
Each speaker calmly faced adversity.
The commotion had been settled by the time the president arrived.
As he entered a cry of "VIVA TIMOR LESTE" came from up the back,
where the lovers usually sit.
I was captivated by the Nobel Peace prize reciprocate as he spoke of
the comparisons between the Western Sahara and East Timor,
of Gandhi's notion of civil disobedience,
as he spoke of the ground force of people who take to the streets,
how 'we' through the power of numbers, can make changes for the better,
and his examples of proof, of the ability, the reality that things do change.
His unrelenting positivity was a force unto itself,
he humbly confessed he was no techno head
that only this morning as he was checking his emails-
no one ever wrote to him anymore;" I had time
to look at Youtube, I put Jose Ramos-Hotra in and
there were so many videos, who put them all there!"
He then went on to subtly mention the power of information sharing.
It was one of those moments my life when
I thought;
'all roads lead to this moment' .
And so what, other than the spreading of information about the plight
an occupied country, what action do I take?
I simply write this
Biodynamic Farming
does not use superphosphate.
From farm to plate we can change politics, our actions,
our daily actions do affect the rest of the world.
In Australia we do have the ability to make choices,
we do take liberties daily.
As Aung Sun Su Chi says " Please use your liberty, to help us with ours."
If you don't already grow your own
Support Organic and Biodynamic Produce.
brilliant!
